Included amongst this morning’s broadcast bulletins and of interest to Defence is the Sky News report that ISIL are now focussing on urging British recruits to carry out “lone wolf” attacks in the UK instead of travelling to fight in Syria.
ISIL
The BBC’s Radio 4 Today Programme carries reporting on the continued violence in Turkey as Kurdish groups were alleged to have been behind the series of suicide attacks in Istanbul and beyond. It is being reported that the Kurds are motivated by the fact that Turkey’s focus since joining the air campaign seems to be more focused on them than tackling ISIL targets. On the political track the Financial Times and The Times report that government officials are increasingly revising their views on Labour support for the possible extension of the UK air campaign into Syria, planning for a vote towards the end of the year rather than in the early autumn.
WW2 bomb
The Times website and The Guardian carry articles about the discovery of a Second World War bomb in Bethnal Green, as well as the Army bomb disposal team’s role in the response to making it safe.
An Army spokesperson said:
We can confirm that a specialist military bomb disposal team from 11 EOD Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps are on site in Bethnal Green and are assisting the Police with the on-going incident involving a WWII German aircraft bomb that was discovered earlier today.
As with previous incidents, it is important that people follow any advice given by the Police.
Afghanistan
The Financial Times and The Independent report on different aspects of the increased violence in Kabul. The Financial Times reports that a car bomb at the airport killed five people while The Independent carries interviews with Taliban members who say the movement has splintered and is no longer fighting for a common goal.
HMS Hood
The Daily Mirror and The Times report that the ship’s bell of the Second World War Royal Navy warship HMS Hood has been recovered from the sea bed and will be installed as a memorial to those who died.
