The migration crisis continues to dominate today’s news, as Croatia closes seven of its eight road border crossings with Serbia following a huge influx of migrants.

Pirbright Army death - Megan Park (Goy)

It is widely reported that an Army recruit who died at Pirbright Camp in Surrey has been named as 21-year-old Megan Park (also known as Megan Goy). Articles report that Megan, from Lancashire, died during a training march or run during the first week of her Army training and feature a tribute from her family which says it was her dream to join the Armed Forces.

The Army released the below statement to the media yesterday.

We can confirm that a recruit has died while undergoing initial training at the Army Training Centre (ATC) Pirbright.

The incident is being investigated and it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.

We offer our condolences to the family and ask that you respect their privacy while they come to terms with their sudden loss.

 ISIL

The Sun splashes with a report from Erbil where British military trainers of the Peshmerga say ISIL is weaker than the public thinks and the organisation has taken heavy losses. The views are attributed to a British Army Brigadier and officers interviewed in the northern location where UK personnel have been training the Peshmerga this year.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:

It’s a year since we began strikes against IS terrorists. Our brave pilots have been flying day and night, six days a week ever since.

Iraqi PM Abadi has told me our efforts are making a real difference.

A quarter of IS-held territory has been reclaimed. It’s a major blow for an organisation that sells itself on expansion and a myth of invincibility.

Beating them will be a huge effort. We won’t let up until the nightmare of this terrorist ideology is ended.

Elsewhere, the The Guardian, Daily Mail and Daily Star report that it is assessed that 330 members of ISIL have been killed by UK strike activity.

Afghan interpreters

The Daily Mail reports that the legal team for the Afghan interpreter known as ‘Chris’, who worked for British forces during operations in Afghanistan, are considering a fresh legal challenge against the Government.

We help all current and former local staff with any concern they may have about intimidation related to their UK employment. Our policy is about selecting the appropriate measure to mitigate the threat. Read HMG Policy on Afghan interpreters.
