In Defence-related broadcast news, the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme reports that MP Caroline Lucas and Baroness Jones are seeking a judicial review into a UK remotely piloted air system (RPAS) strike in Syria.

The BBC says that a letter to the MOD and the Attorney General's office has been written by lawyers representing Ms Lucas and Baroness Jones.

A Government spokesperson said:

The Prime Minister has been clear that this action was legal, necessary and proportionate.

Russia

The Guardian and The Telegraph report that Russia has promised to make "countermoves" in response to US plans to upgrade nuclear weapons in Germany. Outlets write that Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for President Putin, said that the reported plans were a "serious [step] towards escalation of tensions on the European continent". It is reported that the Kremlin warning is part of a long-running battle with Washington over America's proposed Europe-based, anti-missile defence system.

Torpedo Range - Scotland

It is widely reported in Scottish media that the SNP has claimed that the MOD is planning to double the size of a torpedo range off the west coast of Scotland without any public consultation.

An MOD Spokesperson said:

The consultation is already underway with a range of stakeholders, including local communities and sea users, regarding the proposed expansion of the Raasay Ranges. We have been clear that we are committed to proper engagement as part of the MOD byelaw review, and no decision on the ranges will be made until this is complete.

 Social Housing for Veterans

There are various picture stories across the papers – including in the Daily Express, Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph  – of Prince William and Harry helping to renovate houses for former soldiers in Manchester. This was part of the BBC’s DIY SOS team making an entire street in Manchester ready for war veterans. It is reported that a support centre will also be built and run by the Walking With The Wounded charity and Royal British Legion to assist ex-service personnel with retaining and support for those who have been injured mentally or physically.
