Broadcasters today are reporting that the US and Russia are to hold new talks on air safety in Syria, while there is other coverage of both the MH17 crash report and UK relations with Saudi Arabia.

Syria

The Guardian carries a report discussing the leader of the opposition's views on military action in Syria.

Royal Navy personnel

Former Vice Admiral Jeremy Blackham is quoted in today's Daily Mail saying that the Royal Navy would have to borrow sailors from other countries to man its new aircraft carriers. The Daily Telegraph and The Times report the story. The Times carries comments from Sir Michael Graydon, former Chief of the Air Staff, who suggests the RAF is experiencing manning pressure.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said:

Britain’s Armed Forces are world class and we know how important it is to invest in them, which is why we have committed to spending 2% of GDP on Defence for the next decade, including £160 billion to make sure our people have the equipment they need to keep Britain safe.

Our recruitment  and retention policies are robust and viable and deliver the right mix of regular and reserve personnel. We continue to improve our processes, making it more straightforward for people to begin a career in the Armed Forces.

Recruitment is a challenge but the armed forces have enough people to meet all their commitments across the world and continue to keep Britain safe.

Afghanistan

The Guardian reports that Taliban fighters are withdrawing from the northern city of Kunduz.
