The second Invictus Games has been officially launched today at an event in Washington DC attended by Prince Harry and First Lady Michelle Obama.
They were joined at the Fort Belvoir military base by two members of the British Armed Forces team who took part in last year’s inaugural Games – triple medal winner Mickaela Richards, formerly of the Royal Navy, and Rob Cromey-Hawke, a former Captain with the Army who took home two golds in 2014.
The Invictus Games Orlando 2016 will take place from 8 to 12 May next year at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida.
As in 2014, the MOD will be supported by Help for Heroes in the training and selection of the UK team.
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:
The courage and determination shown by those who compete in the Games is inspirational and I intend to join the nation in supporting them next year.
It is hard to imagine a more stirring embodiment of the famous British spirit than these men and women who bravely served their country and then faced up to life-changing injuries with true stoicism.
Their examples show the important role of sport and physical activity in the recovery process, often facilitated by the excellent work of those involved in the Battle Back programme.
