Of note for Defence news today is further coverage of the Chilcot inquiry into the Iraq war, and reporting of US warnings about the threat of Daesh.

Chilcot inquiry

The Sunday Telegraph claims that British ‘spies’ will start next week to edit sections of the official report into the Iraq War. The article states that a team from the security services are to start the national security vetting process on the final report.

Daesh

An article is carried in The Observer that the US has warned its citizens about "credible threats" to tourist areas in Turkey, on the same day that Turkish police detonated a bag and the US announced new strikes on Daesh. The paper adds that in Istanbul, the US embassy sent an "emergency message" email to Americans that warned them about threats.

Op Northmoor

The Daily Star Sunday reports that dozens of soldiers could quit the Army after being ordered to investigate fellow soldiers for alleged abuses in Afghanistan. The story emerged after an soldier from the Royal Military Police special investigative unit wrote anonymously to Soldier Magazine.

Afghanistan

The Observer and Guardian Online features US Secretary of State John Kerry’s unannounced visit on Saturday to Kabul, where he suggested that Afghanistan's coalition government could continue beyond September to avert a political crisis.

Exercise Griffin Strike

The Combined UK and French Joint Expeditionary Force (CJEF) will face its biggest development test to date as more than 5,000 personnel from the two countries come together for Exercise Griffin Strike.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:

This joint force will combine the might of two of the world’s biggest militaries, backed by our rising defence budget. It will enable us to deploy rapidly with our French allies, helping to keep Britain safe while contributing to security in the world.
