Today’s defence news includes reporting on Libya and coverage of a court case which heard that the youngest British soldier to serve in Afghanistan was beaten to death in an unprovoked street attack.
LIBYA
The Times reports that the new government in Tripoli has said it does not want help from foreign forces to battle Daesh. The article states that the British government expected a request for troops after the formation of the government of national accord led by Fayez al-Sarraj. Our position is as follows.
The UK, along with international partners, is supporting the process to form a recognised Libyan government and we are developing plans to support this. No decisions have been made about the future deployment of any British military forces to Libya as part of an international coalition force.
MURDER TRIAL
The Times and Daily Mirror report that the youngest British soldier to serve in Afghanistan, Dave Curnow aged 20, was beaten to death after an unprovoked, alcohol-fuelled attack on a night out in Cornwall. The articles report on court proceedings that are ongoing and note that Mr Curnow was posted to Helmand province in March 2013 after just turning 18.
