Defence in the media: 13 April 2016

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Defence in the media

Today’s defence news includes reporting on Libya and coverage of a court case which heard that the youngest British soldier to serve in Afghanistan was beaten to death in an unprovoked street attack.

LIBYA

The Times reports that the new government in Tripoli has said it does not want help from foreign forces to battle Daesh. The article states that the British government expected a request for troops after the formation of the government of national accord led by Fayez al-Sarraj. Our position is as follows.

The UK, along with international partners, is supporting the process to form a recognised Libyan government and we are developing plans to support this. No decisions have been made about the future deployment of any British military forces to Libya as part of an international coalition force.

MURDER TRIAL

The Times and Daily Mirror report that the youngest British soldier to serve in Afghanistan, Dave Curnow aged 20, was beaten to death after an unprovoked, alcohol-fuelled attack on a night out in Cornwall. The articles report on court proceedings that are ongoing and note that Mr Curnow was posted to Helmand province in March 2013 after just turning 18.

IMAGE OF THE DAY

British airborne infantry have practised urban operations alongside French armoured infantry as part of a major exercise to demonstrate military co-operation between the two countries. Exercise Griffin Strike is the culmination of six years of work between the UK and French militaries and will demonstrate their potential high-readiness to deploy on operations as the Combined Joint Expeditionary Force (CJEF). 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment (3 PARA), including a company from 2nd Battalion The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR), is training on Salisbury Plain this week (12-16 Apr) with the French 1er Régiment de Tirailleurs (1er RTir). The troops are working together at Copehill Down mock village on their urban fighting skills, with 3 PARA supported by 1er RTir’s VCBI infantry fighting vehicles and Leclerc main battle tanks. The training is building up to a Land Firepower Demonstration on 20 April, which will see the 3 PARA and 1er RTIR show the CJEF’s capabilities by carrying out the mock seizure of a village in a combined parachute, air assault and armoured operation supported by attack helicopters and Close Air Support. CJEF has been developed since the 2010 Lancaster House Treaties, which recognised the increasing alignment of the UK and France’s national security interests and committed the two countries to closer military co-operation.
