Of note for Defence news today is further reporting on yesterday's report into Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), and continued coverage of the Invictus Games in Orlando.
RPAS
The Telegraph carries a story following up yesterday’s report by the Joint Committee on Human Rights that raised questions over the legal basis for the Government’s policy on launching ‘drone’ strikes against Daesh terrorists. Con Coughlin argues in the piece that they have a ‘legal and legitimate licence to kill’ and that in areas controlled by militant groups such as Daesh, ‘drones are often the only viable option’.
Invictus Games
There is further coverage of the second Invictus Games for wounded, sick and injured personnel and veterans. The Daily Mirror runs a comment piece with broadcaster and former gymnast Gabby Logan, who has backed Prince Harry’s call for the Invictus Games to be used to highlight the issue of mental health problems experienced by serving and former personnel. Separately, the Daily Star carries a feature on Team UK captain David Wiseman who is competing despite still having a bullet lodged in his chest.
Daesh
There is reporting in several papers, including in the Daily Telegraph, Daily Express, Guardian and The Sun claiming police fear that a Daesh-inspired terror cell exploited migrant routes into Europe to plot attacks on the UK. Articles say the group allegedly photographed suspected targets in London - including hotels, restaurants and a health centre - and may have planned to slip attackers through Calais to Britain.
