There are a wide variety of defence related stories in today’s media, including the Invictus Games, HMS Brocklesby, and the Bath bomb.

Invictus conclusion

A wide variety of papers carry reports from the end of the Invictus Games in Orlando, with Prince Harry saying he was inspired by the courage of all competitors.

Afghan visit

The Sun reports on the Defence Secretary’s meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani yesterday.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:

The Afghan forces are now leading the security for their country and determining their own future. 450 UK troops are proving providing crucial support to them in that mission. Our servicemen and women can take great pride in what has been achieved in Afghanistan – the terrorist threat has been reduced, helping to make the region more stable and the streets of Britain safer.

Ship specialisation

The Times carries a picture story of the minehunter HMS Brocklesby in refit at BAE Systems’ new Small Ships Centre of Specialisation in Portsmouth dockyard. The hangar, one of the biggest in the UK, allows the fleet of minehunters to be maintained and serviced completely under cover.

Bath bomb

BBC bulletins, The Sun, The Independent, The Express and the Guardian report that the Second World War unexploded bomb discovered in Bath has been deactivated after a major operation.

Army personnel supporting Avon and Somerset Constabulary to deal with a World Two bomb unearthed in Bath. The personnel were from 721 EOD Squadron, 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps, based Ashchurch supported by 101 Regiment RLC (EOD) based Wimbish. Their tasking was to build a wall of sand around the bomb before it was made safe and removed from the site and taken away for disposal.
