Today’s news blog includes coverage of the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and reports that trainee soldiers could be called on during a major terrorist incident.

Somme Anniversary

There is widespread coverage on broadcast and in print this morning ahead of the 100-year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, including feature pieces on Sky News and BBC Breakfast. Looking back at the battle, coverage pays tribute to the 20,000 British Empire soldiers who lost their lives on the first day at the Somme.

Trainee Soldiers

The Telegraph reports that General Sir Nick Carter will today announce that trainee soldiers who have completed the first phase of their training could be called on to help protect Britain during a major terrorist incident.

Seaborne Drones

The Times reports on the Royal Navy’s most senior technology officer Commander Peter Pipkin’s comments that seaborne drones will become “critical” to naval warfare within a decade as they replace sailors on minesweeping, anti-terrorism and other dangerous missions.

Further information on Unmanned Warrior, the Royal Navy’s large scale unmanned systems demonstration, is available here.

Shadow Defence Secretary

Clive Lewis has been appointed as the new Shadow Defence Secretary. Former Shadow Defence Secretary, Emily Thornberry has been moved into the role of Shadow Foreign Secretary.
