Today’s front pages carry reports from yesterday’s Somme commemorations.

BATTLE OF THE SOMME

Every media outlet carries coverage of the Somme centenary commemorations in Thiepval yesterday, attended by the Prime Minister, members of the Cabinet and Royals including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Thousands of guests attended a noon service at the memorial site in North East France, while in Manchester and several other locations around the UK equivalent services were conducted. Several outlets also report that commuters were moved to tears by actors dressed as First World War soldiers at railway stations and other locations across the country.

CHILCOT REPORT

The Mirror, Mail and Times carry articles previewing the publication of the Chilcot report on Wednesday. The government's position is below.

Sir John Chilcot will publish the final report of the Iraq Inquiry next week and it would not be appropriate to speculate on the content of the report. Government will consider its findings carefully once it is published.

IMAGE OF THE DAY

Description; British Forces Cyprus personnel and Epikopi’s Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment held a Somme Day Parade in Happy Valley to remember the sacrifice that so many made 100 years ago. Personnel took part in a two minutes silence today and were involved in various ceremonies to mark the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, which began on July 1, 1916 in North West France. The battle, which saw more than one million soldiers killed, missing or injured on both sides, raged until it finished on November 18 the same year. The Episkopi-based 1st Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, which was formed in 2006, descended from the seven famous regiments in the North West England that fought in the battle of the Somme in order to mark the occasion for its ancestors. Major Colin Howard, MBE, 1 LANCS Quartermaster, who organised the event, said it was imperative that the British Forces should remember the sacrifice that so many made 100 years ago. He said “It is so important that we as a Battalion and Armed Forces as a whole remember those that paid the ultimate sacrifice during the battle of Somme. The battle took part at a time that there was no media coverage so people didn’t realise for many days afterwards the loss that was being felt across the UK and the Commonwealth and it is right for us to pay tribute to them.” For more information and for regular updates regarding BFC/SBAA activity, please visit: Website: www.sbaadministration.org Twitter: @bfcyprus Facebook: BFC SBAA People For further information please contact: Photo Section RAF Akrotiri BFPO 57 Telephone: +35725276428 Email: aktphoto@cytanet.com.cy MOD Crown Copyright 2016
