Defence in the Media: 18 August 2016

Defence news today includes claims about Army manpower and further reporting on Kinloss barracks.

Kinloss barracks

Further reporting on the situation around Kinloss barracks is carried in The Times Scotland. The MOD's position is below.

An MOD spokesperson said:

MOD land currently spans about half a million football pitches. We are looking to sell what we don’t need so new homes can be built on it. Every penny made will be invested back into defence on things like the new maritime aircraft at Lossiemouth or the new ships being built on the Clyde. We’ve currently named 22 sites but no decisions about future ones have been taken.

Military manpower

The Daily Mail today reports that several hundred soldiers are leaving the Army each month, which the paper argues is in part due to the activities of Public Interest Lawyers.

An MOD spokesperson said:

We realise our Armed Forces do a challenging job and that’s why this Government has done more than any before it to ensure they feel valued and that their contribution is recognised.
