Of note for Defence news today is reporting that HMS Diamond will target people smugglers in the Mediterranean, and reference to former military personnel in the build up to the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

HMS Diamond

The Observer splashes with news that Royal Navy warship HMS Diamond will sail to the Mediterranean to target people smugglers. The paper reports that the Diamond will be deployed to join Operation Sophia as part of a wider EU effort.  As announced earlier this week, HMS Diamond's primary task as part of the operation is aimed at countering arms and people trafficking.

HMS Diamond’s Commanding Officer, Commander Marcus Hember, said:

I’m proud that we will join the operation and make a contribution to tackling the movement of illegal arms around the region.

Paralympics

The Sun and Mail on Sunday continue coverage in the lead up to the Rio Paralympics, and give mention to athletes who have previously served in the military, including coverage of amputees Dave Henson and John Allan Butterworth, who were both injured on their respective tours.

RAF Marham

There is widespread reporting, including in the Sunday Mirror, Daily Star, Sunday Express, The Independent, Mail on Sunday, The Sun and Sunday Telegraphon the attempted abduction that took place at RAF Marham. Speaking as part of a BBC crime watch appeal due to be shown tomorrow, the papers say, the RAF serviceman claims that the ordeal has ‘turned his world upside down’ and that he feared for his life.
