Today’s defence in the media includes further reporting that HMS Diamond will deploy to the Mediterranean to tackle human smugglers and arms trafficking.
HMS DIAMOND
The Times (p19) follows up reporting yesterday that Royal Navy warship HMS Diamond will be deployed to join Op Sophia as part of a wider EU effort in the Mediterranean. The paper focuses on Diamond’s role tackling people smugglers, and references Libya as the main route for migrants attempting to cross the Med.
HMS Diamond’s Commanding Officer, Commander Marcus Hember, said:
I’m proud that we will join the operation and make a contribution to tackling the movement of illegal arms around the region.
DAESH / SYRIA
The Times (p29) and The Independent (App Edition p23) follow up yesterday’s news that Daesh has lost territory along the border with Turkey after the Turkish military supported rebel forces over the weekend. The Times in its coverage says this Daesh defeat severs the Turkish border as a route for would-be jihadists.
ARMY RECRUITMENT
The Daily Star (p21) in follow up to reporting in the Mail on Sunday that soldiers are being offered incentives to join the Army.
An MOD spokesperson said:
The Army continues to offer exciting opportunities and a fulfilling career to those who serve. Schemes such as these have been used for years, and only play a small part in recruitment for the Army. The UK Armed Forces continues to have the manpower needed to meet its operational commitments.
