Today’s defence-related coverage leads with news of yesterday’s announcement that thousands of hectares of MOD land are being released for new homes to be built.

Land sales

There is coverage, including in The Sun and the The Times, following yesterday’s announcement that a further 13 sites will be released to build thousands of new homes and create a more effective and efficient defence estate.

It is reported that the money raised from the sales will be invested into strengthening the armed forces further.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:

We are getting rid of land that we don’t need to build homes that we do, generating hundreds of millions of pounds in the process. Our commitment to protect and increase the budget for our armed forces means that every penny of that will be reinvested into defence, helping to keep Britain safe

Soldier Security

Following yesterday's article on the security of service personnel, The Times reports that the MOD has removed the names of all army, Royal Navy and RAF officers from the internet.

An MOD Spokesman said:

The security of our people is our foremost concern and we keep the range of measures we have to address the threats to them under constant review. Last November, our policy was changed to restrict publications of such lists to senior officers, already considered in the public eye
