Today’s Defence news includes coverage of events to mark the centenary of the tank, and discussions around the possible creation of a European Union ‘common military force’.
TANKS
BBC News report on events taking place in Central London today, where the Royal Tank Regiment and the Tank Museum are displaying the oldest, as well as the latest, examples of tank warfare to mark the centenary of the tank.
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:
The tank changed the face of modern warfare. We remember the bravery of those very first tank crews and celebrate the world-leading innovation of our Armed forces. Those values remain hallmarks of UK defence today. Our armed forces are in action in 25 countries across the globe and we investing in the equipment of tomorrow, including more than £3.5billion on the next generation of armoured vehicles.”
EU MILITARY FORCE
The Times and The Daily Express both report on EU President Jean-Claude Juncker’s comments on a “common military force”.
A Government spokesperson said:
Our views on this have been made clear in the past – we work bilaterally with a number of member states for our national security and NATO is the bedrock of our collective security.
