Defence in the media: 26 September 2016

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Defence in the media, Reactive statements

Today’s defence-related news includes continued coverage of abuse claims against British soldiers in Iraq.

Iraq abuse claims

There is further coverage of historical abuse allegations in Iraq, including an article in The Daily Mail that wrongly claims Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has blocked serving personnel from giving evidence to the Defence Committee. Our position is below.

It is nonsense to suggest the military have been gagged. We have a long standing policy that serving personnel do not give evidence to committees in a personal capacity and it would be inappropriate to expect these individuals to do so while legal proceedings are on-going. MOD Ministers will be appearing in front of the committee.

Sun Military Awards 2016

The Sun reports that the Millies are back to salute another year of heroic service by the best armed forces in the world…our own. Now in their ninth year, the annual Sun Military Awards will again single out the very bravest and best from the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.

Following the sad death of their Regimental mascot, Lance Corporal Gwillam ‘Taffy VI’ Jenkins in May of last year, Wiltshire based The 1st Battalion of The Royal Welsh will welcome its newest recruit, Fusilier (Fus) Llywelyn 23244169, at a short ‘pass out’ ceremony to be held in Tidworth, Wiltshire on Friday 22 January 2016. In 1844, Queen Victoria presented the Royal Welch Fusiliers with its first official Royal goat and since this time the Regular and Reserve battalions have recruited a goat from the Royal herd at the Great Orme, Llandudno. Following months of basic training under the watchful eye of the Goat Major Fus Matthew Owen, Fus Llywelyn is ready to ‘pass out’ and media are invited to share the occasion as he parades from the Officer’s Mess at Lucknow Barracks to Tidworth Garrison Theatre.
