In defence related news today, the focus is the battle for Mosul and the Iraqi army’s slow advance towards the city in the face of Daesh resistance.

Russian Ships

Most national newspapers, including The Sun, The Times, The Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph report that the Royal Navy is keeping a watchful eye on Russia's Northern Fleet as it heads for the Channel.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:

Mosul

The Times reports that Daesh leaders are abandoning Mosul and are being targeted from the air as they flee. It is claimed that those fleeing are heading towards the Syrian border. The Daily Mirror claims waves of suicide bombers have been launched at troops battling to liberate Mosul, whilst The Daily Express and The Daily Mail say Daesh is preparing to use chemical weapons.

All  papers mention the RAF’s role in operations. You can see the latest strike update on the MOD website.

IHAT

Following the Attorney-General’s appearance in front of the Defence Committee, The Telegraph, The Daily Mail, The Times and The Sun carry his comments that many of the IHAT claims are ‘baseless’.
