A variety of Defence stories are featured in today's news, including civil service and armed forces pay, and the armed forces use of fitness apps.
BONUSES
The Sun reports that Defence officials have been awarded bonuses while troops faced a wage freeze.
An MOD Spokesperson said:
We’ve cut the value of performance-related civil servant bonuses by half since 2011/12. This has contributed to the £5 billion of efficiency savings the department is on course to deliver since 2010. The Armed Forces benefit from their own reward structure worth around £700m in addition to basic pay.
GENDERBREAD MAN
The Daily Star Sunday and The Mail On Sunday both report that a Royal Marines poster intended to promote awareness of gender issues that features a ‘Genderbread’ person wearing a green beret as part of its Sexual Awareness week.
A Royal Navy spokesperson said:
We want the best possible people in the Armed Forces regardless of background - that’s why we are implementing a range of measures designed to encourage a diverse and inclusive workforce. The Navy has been recognised as a Top 10 Employer by Stonewall, one of the UK’s largest LGBT charities.
FITNESS APPS
The Mail On Sunday writes that British troops have been warned against using internet fitness apps such as MapMyRun.
An MOD Spokesperson said:
We haven’t identified any fitness apps of particular concern but keep anything that reveals the location of personnel under review, as their security is of utmost importance.
