Of note for Defence today is news that England and Scotland football players say they will wear poppies on armbands when they play a match on Armistice Day.

Remembrance

There is widespread coverage, including in the Daily Mail, The Guardian, The Star, The Times and The Sun that England football players will defy a ban on wearing poppies in the Armistice Day match. The FA has said its players will wear poppy armbands against Scotland, the papers reports, adding that Scotland says it will follow suit.

RAF Tain

There is continued coverage of the incident at RAF Tain in The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Mirror, updating that around 30 detectives are investigating the death of a soldier in a live-fire exercise.

Defence Minister Mark Lancaster said:

It is with deep sadness that I can confirm that Lance Corporal Joe Spencer from 3rd Battalion The Rifles died at RAF Tain on Tuesday. My thoughts are with Joe’s family, friends and colleagues at this terrible time.

We are co-operating with the police investigation and looking into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

The MOD will be making no further comment at this time.
