Northern Ireland Investigations
There is continued coverage of the investigation into the British Army’s conduct in Northern Ireland in The Daily Telegraph, The Daily Mail, and The Sun.
An MOD spokesperson said:
The overwhelming majority of those who served in Northern Ireland did so with great bravery and distinction. Any member of the military affected by this process will rightly be supported throughout and will receive free MOD legal representation.
IHAT
The Daily Telegraph and The Daily Mail report that human rights lawyer Phil Shiner faces a barrage of legal actions from soldiers.
Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said:
Phil Shiner made the lives of soldiers a misery by pursing false allegations of torture and murder. It was on behalf of those soldiers that we complained about Mr Shiner’s actions and finally he has admitted he was reckless and acted without integrity. He should now apologise to the soldiers whose reputations he attempted to traduce.
Gurkha Welfare Trust
The Times includes a feature on the conclusion of Operation Marmat which has worked with the Gurkha Welfare Trust to help rebuild a school damaged during an earthquake in Nepal.
Cat and mouse aboard a hunter killer
The Daily Mirror and The Daily Record report on a week aboard the Royal Navy submarine HMS Torbay. Both include interviews with members of the submarine’s crew illustrating what life is like onboard.
