This morning there is news of a terrorist attack on a mosque in Quebec yesterday which left six people dead and several others injured. The two attackers have been arrested. BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme also highlights a Parliamentary investigation into fake news and claiming that some news sites are being used by Russia as proxies to spread disinformation and propaganda. Of note for Defence, there is coverage of Northern Ireland investigations and an SSRO consultation.
NORTHERN IRELAND INVESTIGATIONS
There is widespread coverage of comments made by Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire in the Sunday Telegraph where he wrote that investigations into killings during the Troubles are ‘disproportionately’ focused on members of the police and army and that the current system is ‘not working’.
A UK Government spokesman said:
This Government is fully committed to implementing legacy bodies in the Stormont House Agreement which will ensure a more fair, balanced and proportionate way of addressing the issues of Northern Ireland’s past, recognising that 90 percent of deaths during the Troubles were caused by terrorists.
SSRO
The Financial Times reports on a consultation launched by the Single Source Regulation Office on how to improve its role.
An MOD Spokesperson said:
We look forward to receiving the SSRO's formal recommendations in June after their consultation is completed.
