Today’s defence-related news includes updates from the trial of Ciaran Maxwell.

Ciaran Maxwell

There was widespread coverage this morning of Ciaran Maxwell, the Royal Marine who yesterday pleaded guilty to terrorism offences at the Old Bailey.

An MOD spokesperson:

We are aware that a member of the Armed Forces has pleaded guilty to terrorism offences and we will consider the implications very carefully. We will continue to fully co-operate with legal proceedings and, with these ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further.

Iraq Case Review

There is continued coverage of the Phil Shiner case with commentary pieces in the Guardian, Daily Express and the Sun. The Express and Sun welcome the ruling that Shiner has been struck off while The Guardian is critical of Phil Shiner but argue he was doing a vital job.

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said:

Justice has finally been served after we took the unprecedented step of submitting evidence on his abuse of our legal system. Phil Shiner made soldiers’ lives a misery by pursuing false claims of torture and murder – now he should apologise. We will study any implications for outstanding legal claims closely.
