Today’s defence related news stories includes further reporting on the US strikes in Syria on Thursday night.

US missile strikes in Syria

There is continued extensive coverage of reaction to the US missile strikes in Syria, including in The Daily Mail, The Times, The Sunand The Guardian, who report the Defence Secretary’s comments that the strikes were limited and appropriate. Sir Michael also confirmed that he was informed of the strikes by his counterpart, US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis in advance, something which is referenced in coverage in The Sun, The Daily Mirror and The Daily Express.

A Government spokesperson said:

The Government fully supports the US action, which we believe was an appropriate response to the barbaric chemical weapons attack launched by the Syrian regime, and is intended to deter further attacks.What’s important now is that we work for a political settlement to the conflict in the country, while defeating Daesh in both Iraq and Syria.

Leicestershire Police have pledged to support military personnel past and present by signing the Armed Forces Covenant. The force which currently employs four reservists, signed the covenant on 7 April 2017 at an event held at their headquarters in Enderby, Leicestershire. The Chief Constable Simon Cole signed the document and was joined  Her Majestys Lord-Lieutenant for Leicestershire Lady Jenny Gretton, Colonel Tom Redgate, Colonel David Dorbe, Police Commissioner Willy Bach, John S Wilson OBE DL Regional Employer Engagement Director, Chief Inspector Duncan Southall Local Policing Directorate.
