The Armed Forces' role in support of Police on Operation Temperer leads today's news.
OPERATION TEMPERER
In the aftermath of the terror attack in Manchester, all major news outlets, including the front pages of The Times, The Telegraph and The Daily Express, report on military personnel being placed in key public locations to support armed police in protecting the public.
The move comes as part of the activation of Operation Temperer, the mobilisation plan for military support to the police service following a major terrorist attack. Military personnel are backfilling existing armed guarding roles filled by armed police units, thereby releasing armed police officers to support the wider incident response.
Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said:
At the request of the police, we moved swiftly to deploy nearly 1,000 armed forces personnel from across the Army, Navy and RAF to conduct basic static guarding duties. This is freeing up an extra 1,000 armed police officers to patrol the streets and protect the public.
An additional 2,800 military personnel are available to support the police should they request it.
