Defence news today includes an off-duty British Army officer who supported the immediate response to the London attacks, and further reporting of the England football team's training with the Royal Marines.
London attack
An interview is carried in The Sun with Lieutenant Pete Bryan, of 29 Commando Regiment, Royal Artillery, who spoke of the moments immediately after the recent London Bridge terror attacks, when he ran to the scene to help victims. Off duty at the time, Lt Bryan told the paper how he raced from a nearby restaurant to provide aid. He is quoted in the piece that “It is in-built in the Army mantra – you run into trouble and not away from it”. The Sun last week carried an interview with Lt Jared Bambridge, another off-duty soldier who assisted victims of the attack.
Royal Marines
Following the revelation by England manager Gareth Southgate last week that his squad had returned from a “top-secret camp at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines,” The Scotsman features an interview with Harry Kane, who captained England in their European qualifier against Scotland at the weekend, and also scored of a late equaliser. In the piece Kane credits training with the Royal Marines as a key factor in the team’s ability to recover from a losing position, and told the paper: “I picked up a lot about leadership from the time we spent with the Marines.”
