Today’s Defence news is dominated by post-event coverage of The Millies - The Sun Military Awards.
The Sun Military Awards
The Sun has covered the event in full across three pages, listing all winners and featuring stories on London Bridge terror attack hero Lieutenant Jared Bambridge, Antarctic explorers Spear 17 and the 2,000 servicemen who saved thousands of lives and helped clear up the devastating impact of Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean. The event was attended by the Prime Minister, Defence Secretary and military Chiefs.
The Press Association has also reported on the heroism of troops who aided civilians caught up in this year’s terror attacks in London and Manchester and ITV Lorraine featured an interview with Sally Hughes, who was awarded the Hero Overseas Individual Millie for her role in saving 14 crew during a daring sea rescue.
Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said:
Today is about celebrating you – it is about everything you do. It’s not just those people who are serving in uniform today, but it’s even when they have left the services, what they continue to do for their comrades, for people that they know give so much.
Serving in the Armed Forces, doing what you do, is not about doing a job, it’s about giving your whole self to it, making a real difference. And actually having an important role in terms of defending our nation, making sure that people here are safe.
