Today’s defence related news includes coverage of low flying in the Lake District and Army recruitment.
Zip Wire planning application in Lake District
The Times and Daily Telegraph report that the MOD has said that the plan to run zip wires over the Thirlmere reservoir in the Lake District would threaten fighter pilots who use the skies above the park to practice low-level flying. It is also noted that conservationists have rejected the plans saying that the wire would scar one of England’s most beautiful landscapes.
An MOD Spokesperson said:
'Thirlmere is used by the RAF for low flying training as part of an agreement with the Lake District National Park Authority. After reviewing the full planning document we have determined that the potential impact makes it necessary for us to object to the proposals."
Army Recruitment
The Glasgow Herald and Financial Times report on planned saving for the Army’s recruitment contract with Capita.
An Army Spokesperson said:
"We are only halfway through a ten year contract and are confident that we will meet savings of £266 million in the next four years.”
