Defence in the Media: 23 January 2018

Today's defence-related news is led by coverage of the Chief of the General Staff's speech at the Royal United Services Institute.

Sir Nicholas Carter's speech at the Royal United Services Institute

The Daily Mail, The Telegraph, The Times and The Sun amongst others cover Chief of the General Staff's (CGS) speech titled: Dynamic Security Threats and the British Army - with prominent focus on the increased threat from Russia and the changing nature of warfare. The Telegraph, The Times and other outlets also focused on CGS's comment on the possibility that the UK could halt the withdrawal of troops from Germany due to the increased threat.

Armed Forces War Pensions scheme

Following a Written Ministerial Statement earlier this month on War Pensions, The Sun reports that allowances for orphans of troops will increase in 2018-19 to £25.25 per month.

An MOD spokesperson said:

We are indebted to all those who have served our country, and that’s why we will pay over £700 million this year for the War Pensions Scheme. As these payments are tax-free, recipients will benefit more than if the payments were triple locked.
