Today’s defence related news focuses on UK shipbuilding and the Defence Secretary’s visit to RAF Lossiemouth.
UK Shipbuilding
The Telegraph and Daily Record cover comments from the GMB Union on UK shipbuilding contracts.
An MOD spokesperson said:
All our warships are built in the UK and with the Type 26 frigates securing 4,000 Scottish jobs and 20 years of work on the Clyde, and industry preparing to bid for the new Type 31e class, we are witnessing a renaissance in British shipbuilding.
We are launching a competition for three new Fleet Solid Support ships this year and strongly encourage British yards to take part.
Defence Secretary visit to Scotland
Ahead of the Defence Secretary’s visit today there is reporting on defence sites in Scotland. While at RAF Lossiemouth he will break ground on the new £132m facility to home the P8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.
An MOD spokesperson said:
The UK Government is committed to an enduring defence presence in Scotland with more than 20,000 service personnel and MOD civilian staff, spending £1.6bn a year with Scottish industry, supporting 10,500 Scottish private sector jobs and ensuring that Clyde shipyards have 20 years’ worth of work.
While the UK Government is investing in Scotland, the Scottish Government is increasing the taxes of 8,000 Armed Forces personnel based at or from Scotland. The UK Government is looking to counter these tax rises.
The Defence Secretary will be announcing a significant investment that will protect Scotland and the United Kingdom from intensifying threats, create jobs and will increase the number of Armed Forces in Scotland
