Today's defence related news includes continued coverage of the publication of the Government's consultation into addressing the legacy of Northern Ireland's past and former soldier Denis Hutchins.

Denis Hutchins & Public consultation

The Daily Mail reports on Denis Hutchins, a former British soldier who served in Northern Ireland, in the context of the Government's public consultation to address Northern Ireland's past.

A UK Government spokesperson said:

The Government has received the letter and is reviewing it. We are consulting on new legacy institutions to replace the current flawed processes and ensure that there is no unfair and disproportionate focus on former members of the armed forces and police officers.

This Government has always been unstinting in its admiration for the courage and professionalism displayed by our armed forces and veterans and the welfare of our veterans is of the upmost importance. We are clear that without their contribution and in so many cases, sacrifice, there would quite simply have been no peace process in Northern Ireland.
