Future ambitions of the Royal Navy

The Economist reports on the rising ambition of the Royal Navy, referencing new vessels in the pipeline and personnel numbers in the context of the global picture.

A Royal Navy spokesperson said:

Last week we had 24 ships and submarines at sea, both in home waters and four oceans around the world. We have a truly global presence, with nearly 9,000 Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary personnel either deployed, getting ready to deploy, or standing at high readiness.

We are committed to delivering our £179bn equipment plan, ensuring our Armed Forces have the tools they need to defend the country from intensifying threats across the globe.

HMS Mersey

BBC News reported live from HMS Mersey this morning where they met with the Commander of the British protection fleet, Sarah Oakley who said the main tole of the fishery protection squadron is to patrol UK fishery zones, as well as maritime security patrols and escort duties.
