Defence in the Media: Monday 25 June

Defence news today includes coverage of a report into veterans and further coverage on inflatable tanks.

SSAFA report into veterans

The Telegraph and The Sun cover the report issued by the Armed Forces charity SSAFA, with the Telegraph claiming that many working age service leavers feel undervalued by society and misunderstood by civilians.

A Government spokesperson said:

Veterans make a fantastic contribution to society and the vast majority go on to live happy, healthy and successful lives. A career in the armed forces gives individuals unique life skills and veterans are more likely to be employed than the general population.

But it’s right that we support people when they leave service. That’s why we have a range of initiatives in place to make sure people transition successfully, including training, education and financial support. Our flagship Career Transition Partnership provides one to one guidance to individuals leaving the military, as well as training and employment opportunities.

Inflatable tanks

The Daily Mail, Daily Star and The Sun all follow up on the Sunday Times report that the British Army is contemplating a new plan to use blow up tanks to use as decoys.

The paper says both Russia and the US have developed life-size inflatable tanks as decoys intended to fool enemy surveillance by satellite or drones and that senior British military officers have been urged to follow suit after a study of urban warfare concluded the Army should boost its “deception capability”.
