Today’s defence related news includes coverage of the NHS announcement on increased funding for mental health services for veterans.
NHS mental health funding announcement
The Daily Mail and Daily Express (online) both report that the NHS is to create a ‘National Heroes Service’ by spending £10million on expanding its mental health services for military veterans. Specialist services, which help to assess the mental health needs of veterans and provide housing support, will be stepped up. The extra funding will mean that the NHS Veterans’ Mental Health Transition, Intervention and Liaison Service will now be available 24 hours a day.
Minister for Defence People and Veterans Tobias Ellwood said:
Mental health problems can affect us all, and we are committed to delivering the right support to anyone who has signed up to keep our country safe.
NHS England already does so much to care for our veterans, and this increase in funding to support vital services will ensure help is always there for those who need it.
