Defence in the Media: 3 August 2015

The death of Cilla Black and the Government’s announcement of new measures to clamp down on failed asylum seekers lead this morning’s broadcast headlines, which feature little of note on Defence matters.

Calais migrants

The Daily Mail says MPs have been warned that as many as 70% of the thousands of migrants are making it to Britain. Some outlets, including the Daily Telegraph, reference last week’s calls to send in the Army to help. The Daily Express says Calais’s deputy mayor, Emmanuel Agius, called such a move “outrageous provocation” and that they would let the migrants through if this happened. Comment pieces mention once again that MOD land is to be deployed as a lorry park to ease traffic congestion around the M20 in Kent caused by Operation Stack.

Army computers

The Sun carries a short piece on 30 staff being disciplined for viewing or downloading pornography on MOD computers over the last three years. The article includes part of a MOD statement – the full version can be found below.

 A MOD spokesperson said:

We have strict rules on accessing online material which is not related to work and the overwhelming majority of personnel adhere to these. Internet communications are monitored and personnel who fail to act responsibly will face appropriate action.
