The New Day and The Sun report on the Defence Secretary’s announcement yesterday of the £642 million investment in the Successor submarine programme. Both articles state that the investment comes as there is yet to be any confirmation on the date of a vote in Parliament to agree on the project, they also state that this brings total spending on the next generation of nuclear submarines to £3.9 billion.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:

Our nuclear deterrent provides the ultimate guarantee of our security and our way of life. That’s why we are getting on with this investment. This money will support further design work, new infrastructure and the purchase of key parts such as engines and gearboxes, as well as jobs across the UK.

Bogus Veterans

The Daily Mirror, The Sun and Daily Mail report on the Walter Mitty Hunters Club, which seeks to expose people who are making up bogus claims of military service. The articles cite how the group had just ousted Eric Baker who they claim had been lying about his military career as he had been claiming he fought at Goose Green.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said:

It is an offence to make false claims of military service if it amounts to fraud or a similar offence such as obtaining services dishonestly. Anyone who believes a false claim amounts to a potentially criminal act should pass details to the police for investigation.

Syria

The Times and The Express reports that David Cameron, among other European leaders, will tell President Putin to end Russia's attacks on Syrian civilians and opposition forces ahead of crucial peace talks. The article states that David Cameron, Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande will confront the Russian leader in a conference call today amid claims that Russia was behind a series of attacks that targeted rebels fighting President Assad's regime.
