Here is a summary of the main defence related stories in the news this morning.

VETERANS

Ahead of the Budget on Wednesday, a story in the Sunday Telegraph suggests that Chancellor George Osborne is expected to help 4,000 injured war veterans meet the cost of social care in a move to protect their war pensions that will typically be worth an extra £3,000 each year. The Mail on Sunday reports the same, also as part of a wider Budget article, and suggests that this follows a campaign by the Royal British Legion.

TUNISIA

The Sunday Mirror reports that British troops directed Tunisian forces battling against Daesh as more than 100 invaders attacked a town near the holiday resort of Sousse, where 30 Brits were killed last year. The article says that an estimated 35 militants have been killed on the streets of Ben Guerdane, near the border with Libya, and also suggests that 15 members of the British Special Forces are working in an advisory role to help the government.

ROYAL NAVY TEAM SET TO LEAD COUNTER TERRORISM OPERATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST An international, multi-service team led by Royal Navy personnel has been assessed as ready to take command of the Combined Task Force 150, the coalition mission against terrorism in the Middle East. Combined Task Force 150 is the Counter Terrorism task force operating in the Red Sea, Gulfs of Aden and Oman, and Indian Ocean as part of the multinational Combined Maritime Forces. The UK is a key contributor to this effort and is taking its turn to lead the operation, with Cdre Guy Robinson OBE Royal Navy in command. The team is not just made up of Royal Navy personnel, though. Both the Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force are providing specialists, and five Canadian naval personnel are joining the team. Cdr Saleh Aloufi of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces is also incorporated into the command, taking the role of Chief of Staff to the command team and drawing upon his invaluable regional experience. This team has come together in its entirerty for the first time this month and has just completed a validation exercise designed to put the whole staff through their paces. They are now approved to take command of Combined Task Force 150, which they will do on 10th April, taking over from an Australian and Canadian team and leading the operation until August.
