There is reporting about Syria, Libya and an SAS veteran in today's media items of note for Defence.

Syria

A package on Sky News looks at the desperate situation in Syria, including the ceasefire and humanitarian aid being provided to local people.

Libya

The Telegraph reports that former UK officer Colonel Rupert Wieloch has said that a potential military intervention in Libya could carry similar risks as the Afghanistan campaign.

An MOD spokesperson said:

The UK continues to work with international partners on how best to support the new Libyan government.  All planning has been focussed on training Libyan Security Forces to provide their own security to the Government and Libyan people.  No decisions have been made about the future deployment of any British military forces.

Cap Badges

Several papers, including the Daily Mirror, The New Day and The Sun report that the stolen cap badges of an SAS soldier involved in breaking the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege have been returned to his widow. This follows articles that the badges were taken during a burglary.

The Rifles parade through the streets of Swindon to exercise their right to the Freedom of the Borough, as successors to the Wiltshire Regiment who were granted the honour nearly 56 years ago. Members of the regiment, formed in 2007 through the merger of four famous regiments including the Wiltshire Regiment, marched around the Wiltshire town's centre.
