Defence in the Media: 5 July 2016

Today’s Defence news includes widespread reporting on the publication of the Chilcot Report tomorrow, coverage of the House of Commons Defence Committee (HCDC) report on Russia and reporting on calls for Trident to be replaced.

Defence Committee Russia

BBC Radio 4 Today ran a short broadcast on the Defence Committee report on Russia. The piece said that a lot of the actions recommended in the report, such as deploying troops in large numbers to exercise in Eastern Europe, will be discussed at the NATO summit in Warsaw this weekend.

An MOD spokesman said:

The UK is utterly focused on this issue. Together with NATO allies, we're significantly strengthening our collective defence. Backed by a defence budget that will rise annually until 2020, we will lead the NATO Response Force in 2017. We will also be committing significant numbers of troops to NATO's eastern flank later this week.

One of the horses does his best Elvis impression. The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery has today taken over Queen’s Life Guard duties at Horse Guards, an annual duty which sees women as well as men guarding Her Majesty’s Palaces. July has already been a busy month for The King’s Troop, as the unit has participated in commemorations marking the centenary of the Somme in France and in London. The Troop, which is 47% female, has now taken on the role of both the mounted and dismounted guard at the entrance to Horse Guards from today until the end of July. The change takes place while the all male Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment take a break from ceremonial duties to take part in equestrian training in Norfolk.
