In today’s defence news there are reports about Defence Committee comments on a Private Members Bill about medals, further coverage about the Royal Navy and imagery from a British Army exercise.
Shipbuilding
There is continuing coverage of The House of Commons Defence Committee report on Naval Procurement in The Daily Record and The Sun.
A Ministry of Defence Spokesperson said:
We are investing in a growing Royal Navy by building two aircraft carriers, the new Type 26 Global Combat Ship, Dreadnought and Astute class submarines, and offshore patrol vessels. We are also developing new class of Lighter General Purpose Frigate so that by the 2030s we can grow the size of the fleet. This major programme of investment will ensure that the Royal Navy remains one of the world’s most modern and powerful navies with a genuine global reach.
Military Impostors
Several papers report today that the House of Commons Defence Committee have recommended that a criminal offence should be created to punish ‘military imposters’ who wear medals they did not earn. Their report states that the deceitful wearing of decorations damages the integrity of the military honours system and harms the bond between the publication and the Armed Forces. The Committee is supporting a Private Members Bill put forward by Gareth Johnson MP.
