Today’s defence related media includes the imminent defeat of Daesh in Mosul, ongoing coverage of HMS Queen Elizabeth and a ‘ghost village’ on Salisbury plain.
Defeating Daesh
The Daily Express and the Independent all report that Daesh is expected to be defeated in Mosul over the next few days. They also report that RAF warplanes have hit more than 700 targets to support ground forces in the liberation of Mosul.
The Defence Secretary’s comments that British aircraft have also struck 69 targets in and around Raqqa in support of Syrian Democratic Forces advancing on the city from the north, east and west, are also carried.
HMS Queen Elizabeth
The Telegraph, BBC News and the Express, continue to report on HMS Queen Elizabeth, with the BBC showing clips of the ship leaving the Scottish port. This included interviews with the ship’s captain, who highlighted that she is the biggest ship ever built for the Royal Navy and will be able to act as a sea base for a range of operations, from war fighting to disaster relief.

Imber Village
The Telegraph reports that the abandoned village of Imber on Salisbury training area, also locally known as the ‘ghost village’, is to only be open for 3 days a year to the public instead of its current 2 weeks. This follows on from members of the public putting themselves at risk by wandering in out of bound areas.
A Ministry of Defence Spokesperson said:
“Our priority has to be the safety of visitors and some were putting themselves in danger, so regretfully we decided to limit the number of days the church is open.”
