Defence in the media: 4 July 2017

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Defence in the media

Today’s defence coverage includes historical abuse allegations in the cadet forces, Iraq compensation claims, and the Defence Estate in Scotland.

Historical abuse

The BBC Radio 4 Today Programme and Daily Record reported on historical abuse of Cadets.

An MOD spokesperson said:

"Child sexual abuse is an abhorrent crime, and we have robust procedures in place to protect cadets. This includes all adults who work with children undergoing mandatory security and background checks, rigorous disclosure procedures and regular safeguarding training. We encourage anyone who has been a victim, or knows someone who has, to report it to the police."

IHAT

The Daily Mail reported on Iraq-related compensation claims made against UK troops with the assistance of law firm Leigh Day.

An MOD spokesperson said:

"No compensation has been paid to any former detainee without evidence that they were held by UK Forces and we will continue to vigorously defend opportunistic claims against our troops. We have provided evidence that has led to one lawyer being struck off for abusing the legal system and have announced the closure of IHAT.”

Better Defence Estate

The Scotsman, The Herald, and the Daily Record report on SNP comments on Scotland’s defence estate.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said

“The MOD is one of the biggest landowners in Scotland and every penny made from the sale of sites will be invested back into Defence on things like the new maritime aircraft at Lossiemouth or the new ships being built on the Clyde.

The Better Defence Estate Strategy announced to Parliament last Autumn outlines the Department's intentions for the sites which will ensure an enduring Defence presence in Scotland, where it continues to invest heavily.”
