Defence news today includes UK support in Afghanistan, and reporting from a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer in the Black Sea.
Afghanistan
The Daily Mail writes that British troops in Afghanistan are being protected by a new weapon to counter drones. The paper says dozens of unmanned aircraft have been sent over a base in country to spy on UK and US soldiers carrying out a security mission, adding that it is feared they could be adapted to carry explosives.
An MOD spokesperson said:
The UK has an enduring commitment to Afghanistan and supporting the Government and the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces helps to prevent the country from becoming a safe haven for terror.
We do not comment on security measures, but keep all threats under review.
HMS Duncan
The Times reports on the situation in the Black Sea and says HMS Duncan is carrying out a search for a Russian submarine. The article references that the UK is one of the big contributors to the new NATO deployments, deploying Typhoon jets, as well as HMS Duncan to lead a standing maritime group.
