This morning's papers continue to report on the US policy announcement in Afghanistan, as well as Carol Vorderman winning a prestigious aviation award.
PRESIDENT TRUMP ANNOUNCES AFGHANISTAN POLICY
During his address to troops at Fort Myer in Virginia in the early hours of Tuesday morning, President Trump outlined a new strategy for Afghanistan which he called a path toward victory. There is widespread coverage of the news in all major papers, including The Daily Telegraph, The Times and The Independent. Some outlets speculate on the UK's role in light of the news.
Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon said:
The US commitment is very welcome. In my call with Secretary Mattis yesterday [21/08] we agreed that despite the challenges, we have to stay the course in Afghanistan to help build up its fragile democracy and reduce the terrorist threat to the West. It's in all our interests that Afghanistan becomes more prosperous and safer: that's why we announced our own troop increase back in June.
An MOD spokesperson said:
As announced in June, we are already in the process of deploying an additional 85 British military personnel to Afghanistan, bringing our total contribution to 585. Britain and our allies have an enduring commitment to Afghanistan, and this support helps to prevent the country from becoming a safe haven for terror.
