Defence news today includes follow-up reporting to false claims that the Army has relaxed its drug policy for new recruits.

Army drug policy

Following yesterday's Mail on Sunday splash, with false claims that the Army has relaxed its policy on drugs for recruits, there is further reporting in the Daily Telegraph and Press and Journal.

An Army spokesperson said:

There has been no relaxation of the Army’s longstanding zero-tolerance policy on drug misuse.

To suggest otherwise is completely untrue.

Expense claims

There is reporting today on a Freedom of Information release looking at fraudulent expense claims across government, including the MOD. Articles on this issue are carried in the Daily Mirror, The Sun, The Herald and Press and Journal.

An MOD spokesperson said:

The vast majority of investigations found that there were errors made in submitting expenses, rather than fraud. Cases of fraud are rare but we run a proactive programme of work to detect potential fraud and error within our travel claims system. Rigorous checks, such as audits and random sampling, are in place to make sure that fraud is detected and deterred.
