Defence news of note includes continued coverage that British soldiers have worked with the US to control 4x4s with Xbox-style controllers.

Xbox controllers and robotic trucks

There is online reporting, including by the Daily Mail, The Mirror and British Forces Broadcasting Service, of British soldiers controlling 4x4s with Xbox-style controllers, and a UK driverless truck leading American trucks in an unmanned convoy, in what is a world first.

Defence Minister Harriett Baldwin said:

One hundred years ago we pioneered tank warfare with our US allies, and today we remain right at the forefront of military technology together. This exercise has proven the success of our ongoing investment in science and technology as we see concepts becoming reality. This particular project is spearheading solutions to the notoriously dangerous operation of supplying our frontline on the battlefield. Delivering crucial food, fuel and ammo remotely will help save soldiers’ lives.

Service Inquiry

The Scotsman and The Herald today report on the Service Inquiry into the death of Private Conor McPherson following an incident at Otterburn Training Area last year.

An Army spokesperson said:

Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Conor McPherson at this difficult time. The safety of our personnel is our absolute priority and, while deaths in training are rare, any death is a tragedy.

We are now carefully considering the recommendations from the independent Service Inquiry.
