Today’s Defence-related news includes coverage of the search for the Argentine Submarine ARA San Jaun.
ARGENTINE SUBMARINE ARA SAN JUAN
The Sunday Times, The People, The Independent, and The Sunday Herald all report that the British military joined the hunt for a missing Argentine Navy submarine, by sending ice patrol ship HMS Protector to help in the search. The Independent reports that Argentina says that signals have been detected from the missing submarine and that it likely tried to communicate via satellite yesterday.
A Navy spokesperson said:
Following a request from the Argentine Government, HMS Protector has been deployed to join the search and rescue effort for the ARA San Juan.
ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE IN MALAWI
The Sunday Times Magazine covers the story of how an elite team of specially trained British Army soldiers are helping park rangers in Malawi in their war with elephant hunters.
The feature traces the role of the Prince of Wales and his Charitable Foundation which funded counter-poaching trials in 2015 to train rangers to use British military techniques, and ultimately led to the development of the British Counter Poaching Operatives.
Minister for Armed Forces, Mark Lancaster said:
The illegal trade in wildlife significantly damages the ecologies and economies of many African countries, and we are determined to help defeat this problem. British soldiers have had a real impact in helping to counter poaching. Following this the UK Government will now look at what more we can do to support the affected countries.
