Fatality in Syria

Most media outlets, including The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, The Mail on Sunday, The Independent, The Sunday Mirror, Sunday Express, The Sunday People, The Sun, and The Sunday Herald, report on the death of Sergeant Matt Tonroe. Print media this morning notes that Sgt Tonroe was embedded with US troops on a counter-Daesh operation when he was killed by an Improvised Explosive Device.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said:

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Sergeant Matt Tonroe at this dreadful time. Sergeant Tonroe served his country with great distinction and it is clear from the tributes made by his colleagues that he was not only exceptionally dedicated and courageous but also a gifted and intelligent instructor who was respected by everyone he served with. Sergeant Tonroe fought to protect British values, our freedoms and to keep us back at home safe. His sacrifice, unflinching commitment and bravery will never be forgotten.

The Sunday Telegraph features an opinion piece by Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson, who uses the RAF 100 celebrations to reflect on the soaring success of the Air Force.

Robert Goodwill MP report on schools with military ethos

The Sun on Sunday and Sunday Telegraph report that Robert Goodwill MP is to draw up a report assessing how pupils gain from schools that adopt military style education.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said:

Our Armed Forces are the best of their generation, embodying teamwork, leadership and aspiration. Their skills, values and can-do attitudes can inspire today’s young people to challenge themselves and reach their potential. That’s why I’m delighted Robert is exploring the benefits of military ethos in schools and I look forward to seeing the final report.
