Today's Defence news includes the announcement of an £80m investment in a new Air Command and Control system.

Project Guardian

The announcement by the Defence Secretary of an £80m investment in a new Air Command and Control (C2) system known as Project Guardian is reported in The Sun on Sunday. The project will allow the Royal Air Force to more quickly identify and intercept potential threats approaching UK airspace. The article notes that since 2013 RAF jets have been scrambled 68 times to intercept suspect aircraft in our skies - half of them Russian.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said:

With hostile regimes such as President Putin’s Kremlin ripping up the international rulebook and terrorists still targeting our way of life, this cutting-edge technology gives our RAF the upper hand in the face of rapidly changing and intensifying global threats.

This investment will play a vital role in making sure our fighter pilots are primed and ready to keep Britain safe and to counter aggression from those who seek to cause us harm.

The Typhoon's most essential role remains the provision of quick reaction alert (QRA) for UK and Falkland Islands airspace. Detachments have also reinforced NATO air defence in the Baltic and Black Sea regions.
